April 15?, 2003
The date is a guess. I'm not sure of anything. I've lost track of days.
I should have filed my income taxes, if today is in fact the 15th. I didn't. Yet I'm not at all concerned about getting in trouble, because I don't think I can get into any more trouble than I'm in right now.
It started the morning after the dogs attacked Betty.
The sun was up and the day was so peaceful and quiet that it was hard to believe there had been such violence mere hours before. Betty and I were sipping coffee in the cabin's small kitchen, discussing my situation.
Betty was speculating that my anger triggered a change in my DNA, causing tremendous amounts of energy to be released. She also speculated, frighteningly enough, that it was possible for the transformation to continue. That it could result in a chain reaction that would cause me â cause the Hulk â to just keep growing and growing. It was a terrifying notion.
âYou know what scares me the most?â I admitted to her, âWhen it happens⦠when it comes over me,when I totally lose control⦠I like it.â
A look passed over her face. She seemed frightened. Why shouldn't she have been? I was.
Then there was some sort of noise outside. Something stepping on a branch, breaking it, and something else causing leaves to rustle.
I went to a window to look outside.
There was a popping sound and I looked down. Something had flown through the air and landed squarely in my stomach. It was still quivering there, and I recognized it instantly.
It was a knockout dart. A tranquilizer.
Even as I realized it, all the strength vanished from my legs. Then Betty was by my side, and she didn't seem the least bit surprised as she eased me to the floor.
My mind still hadn't processed what was happening, and then Betty was speaking into my ear so quickly, the words tumbling over one another.
âIt's going to be all right. It's just going to make you sleep. You'll forgive me, Bruce. I know you will. I didn't know what else to do to help you, okay? We're going someplace safe, where nothing can come after you. You understand. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't just let you go.â
And just as I slipped into unconsciousness, I saw a gas-masked tactical team in army uniforms burst through the door.
That's when I realized what was happening.
Betty had called her father.
She'd been so afraid of me that she'd gone to a man she couldn't stand for help and protection.
When I awoke, I found myself in a small room. A cell, really. It's where I am right now. Men are marching around outside wearing uniforms, and glancing in at me suspiciously, as if they think I'm suddenly going to turn huge and green and tear them apart.
I don't know where I am. I don't know what I am. And yet everyone's afraid of me, and they all seem to want to know what I know, which isn't much.
